What to Know Before Volunteering at Food Bank of Wyoming

a food bank volunteer unpacking food

Food Bank of Wyoming couldn’t do what we do without volunteers. As our food distribution programs and operations continue to expand across the state, so, too, do our volunteer operations. From packing boxes for mobile pantries and assembling bags of fresh produce, to delivering food boxes to older adults and pulling orders in the distribution center, we have a wide range of volunteer opportunities available weekly!

It takes many individuals and several different Food Bank of Wyoming teams to organize and support a volunteer event from start to finish. The programs team kicks things off by creating a recipe from available food products we have in stock, then passes things off to our warehouse team, which pulls the food from around the distribution center. Finally, our volunteer coordinator and community engagement specialist take over to identify the number of volunteers needed to organize and pack all that food and ensure a positive volunteer experience.

Some of the process outlined above takes place months before volunteers step foot in our distribution center. That’s why Food Bank of Wyoming’s volunteer calendar on our website is an important tool for us to plan. For instance, if we see that we don’t have enough volunteers for a large opportunity coming up, we know we need to reach out to more folks to assist us. Conversely, if too many volunteers arrive for a shift without first signing up, there might be too many hands ready to do their part and not enough tasks to go around.

It is important to us that you have a positive and impactful volunteer experience at Food Bank of Wyoming. We value your time and commitment to your community and are excited to have you as a volunteer! Please look at our calendar and sign up for any open opportunities to help our neighbors across the state. If you are having problems signing up or have any questions about our volunteer opportunities, contact Shelly Swierkowski at 307-232-4008.
