What About Food Drives?
We know how much you want to help and we want your efforts to do the most good!
While we certainly accept non-perishable food and essentials, food drives can actually be cumbersome and costly. Because we’re able to purchase food the same way a grocery does and we get lots of food donated from grocers, the food industry, farmers and ranchers, we’re glad you’re considering other ways to give back.
What Happens With Food Drives?
When food is collected, donors either go shopping and pay full price for food (or sadly sometimes donate old, unwanted food that is no longer safe to eat); they must take the food to the collection location; food is stored and then delivered to our warehouse or picked up by our drivers; every item must be inspected, sorted, cleaned if needed and re-boxed for distribution. Sometimes jars break and cans get dangerously dented, so some food ends up getting thrown away.
Why Is Money Better?
We can get 5 pounds or 4 meals for every dollar! Food comes in by the truckload from grocers, manufacturers, wholesalers, farmers and ranchers. Most if it is ready to distribute and requires less handling. Even a quarter can mean a meal to someone in need, so no donation is too small. 96 cents of every dollar we receive goes to our food distribution program. We’re accredited by the BBB and have held a 4-star (highest) rating from Charity Navigator for 8 consecutive year, putting us in the top 2% of charities nationwide! We will use your donations wisely.
Thank you for reading this and for considering creative ways to make a difference! We’re excited to learn how you decide to help and we’re here to assist with ideas that can nourish our hungry neighbors.
Real Kids Who Made a Difference!
Kids have sold lemonade, offered pet-a goat events, washed cars, hosted teddy bear tea parties, collected quarters, contributed their allowance, performed chores and so many other things.
We think each and every one of them is so special. You can read some of their stories on our blog. We hope we can feature you one day soon!
